Diabetes Type 2

Diabetes Type 2 is often called adult onset diabetes because it usually occurs in the later years of life. As a person ages they lose the ability to produce enough insulin or the ability for that insulin to work effectively to process the blood sugar needed for living. Diabetes Type 2 is usually a difficult diagnosis for a person to face because it demands life style changes in a person who has reached a point where they are content with the way they are. Any type of diabetes usually will cause a person to have to change their diet, their exercise routine, their personal care habits and the medications they have to take. Although the changes may be difficult to make, they are necessary for a person to continue to have a high quality of life.

Type 2 Diabetes Diet

When a person is diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes there are some significant dietary changes they will need to make. One big concern with diabetes is the increased risk for stroke and heart disease. Decreasing the amount of saturated fat in the diet and trying to change to healthy oils is a major change that needs to be made. The Type 2 diabetic will also need to learn to avoid simple carbohydrates. Eating candy and foods with processed sugar will have and instant and dramatic effect on raising blood sugar levels. By avoiding these foods the diabetic will find that they have much better control of their disease. It will be very important for the diabetic to get some diet counseling and teaching so they can know what changes will work best for them.

Diabetes And Exercise

It has been proven that exercise has a direct affect on blood sugar levels. A person with Diabetes Type 2 needs to implement some type of exercise routine into their daily life. This does not mean they have to do a hard work out every day. Simple exercises such as walking, swimming, and playing a favorite sport are very beneficial. Even incorporating household chores into the exercise routine can be beneficial. Instead of looking for easy ways to accomplish tasks a person can walk extra steps or even jog or dance through the house. Any increased physical activity will be helpful.

Type 2 Diabetes is known to hinder the body’s ability to heal from any wounds or skin conditions. A person diagnosed with diabetes will need to learn to prevent wounds and skin conditions and to take care of any condition that does come up. It is especially important for a person to take good care of their extremities. It may be wise for a person to find a podiatrist to care for and check the feet for any complications that may occur.

Type 2 Diabetes Medications

It is important for a person with Diabetes Type 2 to take the medications as prescribed by the doctor. The physician will probably start a preventive medication program for the known complications of diabetes such as high cholesterol and high blood pressure. The diabetic will also probably take one or more medications specifically for the diabetes and may need to take insulin for the best control of their diabetes.
