Different Types of Allergy Medicine

What some people don’t understand about allergy medicine is that it does not treat the allergies, but it does treat the symptoms and the reactions. There are many different types you can try, and what will work for you depends on what type of allergy you have, and how severe your symptoms are when you come into contact with an allergen. Though you may be able to get relief from some over-the-counter medications, there are some that you can only get from your doctor. You may have to try a few different ones before you find the one that works for you.

I have allergies, but they are mild. I’m not sure what they are, but I do know they are airborne. They are the worst in the spring and in the summer, so pollen’s or molds are the most likely suspects. The allergy medicine I use is the over-the-counter brand Claritin-D®. I tried many different ones from the store shelves before I found the one that worked right for me. If yours are mild, you may have to go through the same process. However, if you can find a solution in the store, you can save some money on your allergy medicine.

These allergy medicines are referred to as antihistamines. When your body encounters the allergen, it releases histamines that fight them off. These histamines are what cause the symptoms you are experiencing. The most common ones are runny and itchy nose, sore throat, watery eyes, sneezing, and dry skin problems, just to name a few. A good allergy medicine will get rid of these problems, or will at least get them under control. Every one will have a different reaction to histamines, and that means that each person will react differently to each different brand of medication.

Some people find relief by using a nasal spray as an allergy medicine. This often offers relief in many different ways. The spray may clean out the allergen from your nose, which can help stop the histamines from racing through your system. You can also use eye drops for your eyes, and you might want to find something to help sooth a sore throat. You can also use something that is made to sooth the skin if you are suffering from dry and itchy skin and other allergy related skin problems.

If you have an allergy to insect stings, you have a more serious issue. If you are stung, you may need to have something with you. Some react very violently to a sting, and the little time it might take to get to the emergency room is often too long. The most common allergy medicine for this type of thing is Epinephrine. Through a series of reactions throughout the body, this adrenaline stops the allergic reactions that can cause serious and sometimes fatal results. If you have no idea where to start in regards to any of these different medications, make sure you see your doctor for guidance.
